Frankly, it might be easier to name a front row Kylie Jenner hasn’t been spotted perched upon. At just twenty-five years old, she’s long been established as a fashion industry fixture; whether it’s scoring magazine covers like this one or appearing on the steps of the Met Gala dressed by Balmain, Versace, and in 2022 the late Virgil Abloh for Off-White, she’s more in demand than ever.
And because she’s grown up in the spotlight, we’ve gotten our own front row seat to Jenner’s style evolution. She’s never shied away from experimenting with hair color, playing with both dye and wigs, and has worn everything from body-hugging Balenciaga bodysuits to tongue-in-cheek vintage Comme des Garçons. Sure, it’s easy to look good when you have access to custom garments from pretty much any fashion house on earth, but Jenner also knows how to put her own spin on things, adding accessories (and, of course, killer makeup moments) to create looks that are pure Kylie. She has the ability to single-handedly set trends with one mere Instagram post.
And while the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner empire is no slouch when it comes to keeping up with the high style bar set by her elder sisters, she’s the one setting the pace for their respective business ventures. After launching Kylie Cosmetics in 2015, Jenner was able to ride a wave of success to billionaire status in just a few short years. You’d think that would be enough for any twenty-something to take an extended vacation. Not so for Jenner: she kept building, introducing lines like Kylie Skin and Kylie Baby, and relaunching Kylie Cosmetics with new formulations.Fans can now catch up with Kylie again as season two of Hulu’s The Kardashians debuts this month. CR Fashion Book spoke to Jenner about business, babies, and her favorite fashion moments.
You’ve been to so many iconic fashion shows; which of them stand out in your mind as being emotionally moving or show-stopping?
I would say the most impactful show for me was Virgil Abloh’s last Off-White show. I couldn’t make it to the show as I was very pregnant at the time, but I was able to watch it live. I thought it was so beautiful, emotional, and moving.
I have to imagine you have an incredible fashion archive; what pieces are you most excited to save for Stormi?
I save everything for my daughter—I have the most amazing pieces, and I cannot wait to share my entire archive with her when she is older. I’m so excited to see how she is going to wear and style them! And hopefully she wears one of my Met dresses to prom [laughs].
If you could take the reins of one fashion house for a day, which would it be and why?
I would love to take over Hermès for the day—it would be amazing to have the chance to design a Birkin bag.
Tell me a little bit about your CR Fashion Book cover shoot. What was the vibe like on set? How were you feeling about the styling?
It was so much fun shooting for CR—we ended up staying until 11 P.M. to make sure we got the best shots! I thought the styling was really fun, and my favorite shot has to be the one where I am surrounded by my most memorable wig moments.
This year was the first time all the Kardashian-Jenner sisters got to attend the Met Gala together! What was that experience like for you?
It was very special to be there with my family at such an iconic event! We have talked about this moment for so many years, so it was amazing to have it finally happen.
You’ve been running a business for so long; how do you keep the Kylie empire evolving?
I am so blessed to have a job where I genuinely love what I do. I’ve always enjoyed makeup—creating a look is a creative process that I really love. I’m lucky to have been able to turn my passion into a successful business, and share my favorite products with consumers. It is so much fun, and there are still so many products we haven’t launched yet that I want to develop. I’ve been working really hard on creating the best foundations—I cannot wait to launch these!
It seems like your business never stops growing! Where are you finding the inspiration for new product lines?
I have endless ideas—I really draw inspiration from everything around me. When I create my special collections, it allows me to see my ideas come to life, which only inspires me more. Each launch for Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin is designed for a specific purpose, and is formulated with high quality ingredients while still being at an accessible price point. Our recent Gloss Drip and Glow Balm launch for Kylie Cosmetics was inspired by the beautiful glow skin gets in the summer.
You’ve been on television for over half your life now. How does The Kardashians feel different for you this time around?
The Kardashians on Hulu captures a whole new side to us that the audience hasn’t seen—it is way more like a docu-style, which gives viewers at home a different experience than Keeping Up with The Kardashians. It also focuses on us more as individuals, rather than having us film as a group all the time, which allows us to share things happening in our lives and businesses.
What are you most excited for fans to see in the upcoming second season of The Kardashians?
It definitely shows an exciting time in my life—the second season focuses on me getting back to my life and work after having a baby. I’m excited to share that journey with viewers.
